MEET GABOR GYURKO
My name is Gabor Gyurko, and I am the proud owner of Garden Hoppers, providing professional landscaping services. I first moved to England in 2004 — the world was quite different back then! I came for a one-year work placement from my catering school to gain experience as a chef and improve my English. During that time, I met my future wife, who was also completing her work placement at the same hotel — and she was Hungarian too! After returning to Hungary for a short while, we decided to move back to England. We both began attending English language courses while working full-time. I soon progressed to NVQ Level 2 and then Level 3 in Professional Cookery, as well as completing an NVQ Level 3 in Professional Patisserie. I gave my all in every aspect of my training, and through dedication and hard work, I became one of the first students that year to complete all my courses successfully. In recognition of my efforts, I received several awards in 2008 — including Advanced Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery, Advanced Apprentice of the Year, and All-Round Craft Student of the Year. In 2010, I also completed a Kitchen Management Degree while continuing my full-time job. As time went on, my wife and I began thinking about starting a family, and I realised that a career in catering — with its long hours, evenings, and weekends — would take away too much family time. That’s when I decided it was time for a change and looked for something that allowed me to be more present at home. My father was a builder and bricklayer by trade, so I already had some practical skills, and I’d always enjoyed hands-on work. That interest gradually led me towards landscaping. I began researching, studying, reading, and learning everything I could about the field — and I’ve never stopped since.
Over the years, I’ve come a long way. Today, I’m a self-taught landscaper who takes great pride in his craft. My work is driven by passion, commitment, and an eye for detail — because, for me, attention to detail is a must. Every day offers an opportunity to learn something new — from experiences, challenges, and the people around me — to become a better version of myself tomorrow.
